Overview & Experience
Located in the southeast corner of Sri Lanka , the 18,149 hectare KUMANA (YALA EAST) NATIONAL PARK is a well-known eco tourism attraction and bird sanctuary where a multitude of birds breed and roost. One of the most significant features of the park is the ‘Kumana Villu’ – a 200 hectare natural swamp lake, fed by the ‘Kumbukkan Oya’ through a half mile long narrow channel. It is at this mangrove swamp that many water birds nest in May and June. Regular sightings include such species of bird as pelicans, painted storks, spoonbills, white ibis, herons, egrets and little cormorants.
The very rare black-necked stork has also been spotted at the swamp. Besides the prolific birdlife, Kumana is also home to some of the mammals found in the larger YALA NATIONAL PARK (west) park, such as elephants and leopards. The vegetation in Kumana consists mainly of mangrove trees, kumbuk trees and the karan fern, as well as the open marsh area. For bird watching enthusiasts, the park is an ‘absolute must’.

"We really enjoyed our Kumana safari withBudget Arugambay Tours and safari. Our driver was friendly, knowledgeable and a very good driver/wildlife spotter. We were amazed at how much wildlife we saw! We got unlucky with the weather at the end but we didn’t mind because we still had lots of encounters with wildlife especially elephants. The refreshments provided were delicious and included chocolate milk, bananas and Sri Lankan pancakes with coconut, honey and banana inside! We would definitely recommend! Thank you again"

"We had an amazing Safari with Manaf, the park was quiet and we were able to see many animals including multiple elephants and even two leopards, one of which walked straight past our jeep within about 2 meters. Manaf was excellent at spotting animals that were very well hidden and has extensive knowledge of animals, particularly birds. The food which was prepared byAnsa was also amazing. Would highly recommend this tour."

"Really professional safari operator in Arugam Bay. We did a full day safari in Kumana with our guide Ansa and it was wonderful. We were lucky enough to see 2 leopard, 15 elephants and many amazing birds. Ansa was able to spot many animals hiding in the trees like owls and monitor lizards which made the experience extra special. Lunch and breakfast was homemade and delicious, and we enjoyed eating in the middle of the park. The whole experience was fantastic and I highly recommend choosing Budget Arugambay Tours & Safari."

We took a gamble to try again at Kumana; our lovely guide, Ansa, knew how much we wanted to see a leopard and he made it into a mission, which paid off as we saw one at the very end thanks to his persistence! Other than the leopards, the park also has beautiful nature, especially the birds are very beautiful."

"We had an amazing time on the full day private tour. We saw 13 elephants, one leopard, lots of cool birds, jackals, mongoose, black necked hares, wild boar, buffalo, monkeys, crocodiles, and deer. Our guide, Ibu, was very good at spotting all the animals and always pulled our car up so we had a great view. The private tour was a great option because we were able to switch to whichever seats/side of the car had the best views throughout the day. Highly recommend! :)"

We only caught a glimpse of the leopard but saw plenty of every other animal. A must-do!"

"We had a perfect Full day Safari. Ansa picked us up absolutely on time and even prepared a fantastic breakfast and Lunchfor us. He was the only guide that day who found a leopard for his guests. The other jeeps were very impressed by my little leopard video. He was also extremely attentive and, despite his constant observation of the animals, sensed when I wanted to take a photo of a little bird and slowed down. I would definitely go back anytime."
